Essential Question: How can you make new friends feel welcome?
Comprehension Skill: Author's Point of View (TESTED SKILL)
Author's Point of View (POV) is what an author thinks or feels about the topic he/she is writing on. Depending on the words an author uses, we can determine if he has strong feelings, positive or negative, towards a topic. We will be reading informational text that is full of facts and information. From what we read, we will have to figure out the Author's stance and what he thinks or believes.
Vocabulary Strategy: Synonyms and Antonyms (TESTED SKILL)
To continue with context clues, we are focusing on synonyms and antonyms in the text. Synonyms are words that have similar meaning, while antonyms have opposite meanings. We often find synonyms and antonyms in the text while reading. We are going to be using those words to help us determine the meaning for an unknown word.
Genre: Biography
Biographies share secondhand information about a person. We read biographies to gain more insight and knowledge on a particular person. These can be really fun and interesting to read!
Comprehension Strategy: Reread
Rereading is an important strategy to use when reading text, especially informational text! All those facts and information can get pretty confusing, so it's in the reader's best interest to slow down and take the time to read over a second, or even third, time. Rereading helps the reader have a more clear picture of what the Main Idea is and allows them to show better understanding.
